Guest Panel Discussion: Accessibility Journeys
At the time of year when you may be thinking about your 2023 planning, we gathered a panel of special guests who shared their experiences and insights from the different accessibility journeys they’ve led in their organisations.
We asked them questions like: How did they get buy-in to make the accessibility transformations they’ve achieved? What have been their biggest obstacles or challenges? And how have their organisations benefitted from their accessibility leadership?
There were some great takeaways:
- On knowledge: Don’t fear what you don’t know. And tackle things one bite at a time. And ultimately, no matter how mature you are, “There’s no such thing as fully accessible”. Make sure you keep on learning.
- On buy-in: Diversity & Inclusion is part of most companies’ values. It’s the right thing to do. Appealing to the human side of your internal ‘buyers/stakeholders’ with real tangible stories of people’s problems has unlocked investment and commitment. Use this to get buy-in to take accessibility deeper into your organisation.
- On Responsibility: Digital Accessibility is everyone’s responsibility, not just a designated team. “Demystify, train, and sustain” is key to making it happen.
- On the future: Each of the panelists had a positive attitude to accessibility – seeing their organisation’s accessibility future being “full of opportunity”. Where could you unlock opportunity through accessibility?
