Hassell Inclusion wins International Acclaim for Digital Accessibility Expertise

  • UK-based digital accessibility consultancy wins coveted UN-backed 2022 Zero Project Award for innovation.
  • Also receives coveted Impact Transfer Award – one of only ten worldwide

Hassell Inclusion has received international acclaim for its Digital Accessibility Maturity Scorecard as a winner of the 2022 Zero Project Award, a UN-backed scheme that advocates for a world with zero barriers for all persons with disabilities.

As well as being one of 76 projects around the world that have been recognised for their innovative practices and policies on accessibility, Hassell Inclusion’s Scorecard has been named one of just 10 global projects to receive an Impact Transfer Award.

Overall, the awards scheme received 381 nominations from 86 countries across civil society, the public sector, business and ICT, which was reduced to a shortlist of 160 before picking the most deserving projects.

Based on the new ISO 30071-1 standard, Hassell Inclusion’s Digital Accessibility Maturity Scorecard is an online self-assessment tool that helps organisations to see how well-placed they are to deliver digital accessibility, and offers a personalised action plan for embedding lasting changes to policies and procedures.

Established in 2011, Hassell Inclusion has been at the forefront of digital accessibility for many years, with chief executive, Jonathan Hassell, the author of the international ISO 30071-1 code of practice for creating accessible ICT products and services. The consultancy works with businesses across the globe to activate and embed accessibility into their digital products such as websites and mobile apps.

Commenting on the news, Jonathan Hassell, chief executive of Hassell Inclusion, said:

“We developed the Scorecard to engage businesses in the issue of digital accessibility in a way that would be meaningful across their organisation and therefore have the most impact. Once completed, the Scorecard doesn’t just produce a checklist of problems to fix. Instead, it is purposefully designed to illustrate the need for a more comprehensive change in approach, which we know from experience is far more effective than simply checking the accessibility of each product or service in isolation.”

“As an issue, digital accessibility is still in the shadows with many organisations not fully appreciating the social and commercial implications of failing to act. There is a real opportunity for those who embed effective policies and procedures within their business to better serve significant sections of society and win their trust and loyal custom. We are proud to have been recognised by such a prestigious scheme and look forward to working with the Zero Project as part of their Impact Transfer Programme.”

Hassell Inclusion will be presented with their award at the 2022 Zero Project conference in Vienna, Austria.
